Two Sides of the Same CoinRecovering the Kingdom of God | May 12, 2026

In the great mystery of salvation, God's absolute sovereignty and our human responsibility stand not in opposition, but as two inseparable sides of the same divine coin. This truth is not abstract theology—it is the practical key to transformation, humility, and walking in the footsteps of Jesus. The Apostle John records a piercing statement from our Lord that cuts to the heart of the matter:

“Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”

— John 8:47 (ESV)

This verse reveals a profound spiritual reality: hearing and obeying the words of God is not merely an act of the will, but flows from being of God. And the gateway to that reality is humility.

Jesus Christ gently welcoming a young child with open arms, illustrating childlike humility and the Kingdom of God as described in Matthew 18:3-4.

Why Humility Is Everything

Practically speaking, the only way any of us truly changes is through humility. Humility is a gift from God. If a person is not humble, they will not hear the words of God, and they certainly will not do them. Pride hardens the heart. Scripture shows us heartbreaking examples where individuals become so entrenched in evil—through repeated rejection of truth—that their hearts are fully hardened. At that point, pride becomes total, indistinguishable from the devil himself.Yet Jesus never leaves us without hope. He knows we are individuals with real choices to make. That is why He calls us to “hear and do” His words by becoming humble like a child (Matthew 18:3-4). Childlike humility is the posture that opens our ears to the voice of the King.At the end of the day, the path forward is clear and unchanging:

  • Pursue justice

  • Walk in righteousness

  • Show mercy

  • Cultivate virtue

  • Worship God with all your heart

  • Never give up

  • Persevere to the end

This is the life of the Kingdom.

Open Bible illuminated by heavenly light with a golden path leading to the City of God, symbolizing John 8:47: "Whoever is of God hears the words of God" and perseverance in the Kingdom.

A Final Word of Encouragement

God’s sovereignty does not cancel our responsibility - it empowers it. When we humble ourselves, we position our hearts to hear His voice. When we hear His voice, we are empowered to obey. And in that obedience, we recover the Kingdom - one humble step at a time. If this resonates with you, I invite you to subscribe to RecoveringtheKingdom.org for more biblical teaching, practical application of the Scriptures, and insights on whole-person health in the City of God. May the Lord give us all ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches and in obedience to His Word.

In the love and humility of Christ,
